Bugs

There are bugs on our lettuce and bugs on our beans.
There are bugs on our tomatoes and bugs on our greens.
There are bugs bugs on the peas and carrots too.
our garden’s not a garden our garden is a zoo.

Jackal

The seals take refuge from the scorching sun as the waves crash in from the endless ocean the only source of water around. The dunes from the Namib Desert stand as tall as giraffes. The Jackal stands on top of the hill loaning for a fresh meal of new born seal.  He’s lonely, in search of an opportunity to kill. Watching, waiting unspotted. In the corner of his eye he sees a baby seal isolated on top of a hot dry rock.  He takes his approach. He pounces. The baby seal, the baby seal has no chance now, his jaws are around its neck. The jackal dashes leaving a trail of blood behind him. As the mother mourns over the heart wrenching loss of her young,  the jackal lies on the dunes savouring its bloody meal. As the sun drops on the beach, the golden sand and grey rocks are bathed in an orange light. The beach is barren waiting for the commotion of next year.

We have some fabulous photos of Caleb swimming with Moko the dolphin. Moko is wild and has befriended the people of Whakatane/Ohope. The children have written stories of their experiences with Moko which we will share over the next few weeks. February 2010
